I recently read a quote about the Shaker philosophy of design: "The Shakers were not using simplicity just for simplicity's sake. It was a way of expressing, a way of worshipping. A chair is beautiful because it functions well, and so you pare away all of the decorative items and get back to the simplicity."  Of course the Shakers probably never wore rings precisely for this reason!  But if they had, I like to think that this one would have met with their approval.
